Program Description

Participants will learn about changes introduced in IDEA 2004 including:

  • New requirements for initial evaluations, reevaluations, and parental consent
  • New requirements for IEPs, IEP goals, IEP teams, IEP meetings
  • New eligibility issues for students with specific learning disabilities
  • New procedural requirements and timelines, including the “Due Process Complaint Notice” and “Resolution (IEP) Session”

Participants will learn about requirements in No Child Left Behind including:

  • Reading and research based instruction
  • Highly qualified teachers
  • Parental rights and options
  • High Stakes testing

Participants will also learn how to:

  • Use tests and measurements to measure progress
  • Write SMART IEPs
  • Use tactics and strategies for effective advocacy

About the Presenters

Peter Wright has practiced special education law since the 1970’s. In 1993 he represented Shannon Carter before the U.S. Supreme Court in Florence County v. Shannon Carter (510U.S. 7). Pete was drawn to a career in Special Education law because of his own experience in school. He is now one of the leading special education attorneys in the nation

Pamela Darr Wright is a psychotherapist who has worked with children and families for more than 30 years. Her training and experience in clinical psychology and clinical social work give her a unique perspective on Parent-child-school dynamics, problems and solutions

Pete and Pam Wright are the authors of:
